#23 • Vintage Gray Mabe Pearl Pendant and Earrings in Sterling Silver
Part of 2nd Annual Rotary Club of Thomasville BIG IMPACT AUCTION (timed auction by Wiregrass Auction Group)
High bid $210.00
Status: Sold
Mabe pearls with their smooth texture and lustrous appearance symbolize grace and beauty. These pearls are costly because of their domed surface and larger size. The impressive pearls in these earrings and pendant are spectacular examples of mabe pearls at their finest. Donated by Rotarian Carol Jones. Value: $400 Mabe pearls are large, dome-shaped cultured pearls with a flat back that are grown against the inside of a mollusk's shell, rather than freely inside. They are created by gluing a rounded nucleus to the shell, which the mollusk then covers in nacre over several years. After harvesting, the blister pearl is cut from the shell, the nucleus is removed, and the hollow space is filled with resin and backed with a shell piece. These pearls are known for their size, iridescence, and versatility in jewelry, but require careful handling due to their softer nature.
